As we previously reported, the FCC eliminated the main studio rule, which required broadcasters to maintain a main studio in or near a station’s community of license. The rule change will take effect on January 8, 2018. Once effective, broadcasters will no longer need to maintain a main studio.
With the elimination of the rule, broadcasters are reminded that they still have an obligation to maintain control over essential station matters, which include personnel, programming, and finances. Stations must also maintain a local or toll-free telephone number, which must be answered during regular business hours and fulfill their obligation to provide service to their local communities.
If you have any questions about the elimination of the main studio rule, please contact any attorney in our office.
